Charles III confirmed Saturday, during his official proclamation as King of Britain in a historic ceremony, that he is “well aware of the great duties and responsibilities” entrusted to the king.

The 73-year-old monarch told the Ascension Council of senior political and religious advisers he would do everything in his power to set an “inspiring example” for his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday at the age of 96.
