Immigration experts have warned that Prince Harry could be denied entry to the United States and put his visa “at risk” after admitting to using illegal drugs.
The Duke of Sussex, 38, admitted to using cocaine, smoking cannabis and eating hallucinogenic mushrooms in his diary.
Typical applicants are denied a visa because of their history with illegal substances, but US authorities have indicated that entry to the country is granted on a “case by case” basis.
It is not clear whether Harry, who moved to California with his wife Megan Markle in 2020, has separated his drug use in the visa application, according to the British Daily Mail.
Experts warn that if he “lies” about his past, his visa could be revoked.
In his new autobiography, “Reserve”, Prince Harry revealed that he first took cocaine at the age of 17…and then did it on several other occasions.
He also admitted to taking it during a celebrity-filled event in California where he smoked weed after his first meeting with Meghan.
US immigration rules state that “an individual’s current and/or past actions, such as drug or criminal activities … may render an applicant ineligible for a visa.”
It is not clear what type of US visa Harry holds, but analysts speculate that he holds either a spousal visa (sponsored by his American wife) or an O-1 visa, which is granted to people of “extraordinary ability”.
If Harry holds an O-1 visa, which is often given to celebrities and athletes, it will have to be renewed after three years.
The Sussexes moved to California in 2020, which means his visa could expire this year. His renewal application could be affected by his newly admitted drug history.
However, immigration experts note that Harry should have been denied residency in the US if he had revealed his drug use in the application process.
