Members of the Wells family always capture the hearts of their fans with their family photos, which they share on social media on various occasions. For example, the family’s 2022 Christmas card charmed everyone who saw it, as it showed Kate, William, and their three young children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, strolling down a country lane in different shades of blue, with their matching outfits. The intended message of the color coordination is clear: “family unit.”
Last April, the Prince and Princess of Wales shared a special photo on the occasion of Prince Louis V’s birthday, in which the little prince appeared wearing a wonderful blue jacket, while his mother was pushing him in a wheelbarrow
A few weeks later, when Princess Charlotte turned eight, her parents shared a photo of their daughter wearing a white dress dotted with blue flowers, and Prince George also appeared in a photo of his tenth birthday in a navy and white check shirt. That is, the color blue was dominant in all private family photos, and it is clear that the Prince and Princess of Wales’ attraction to that color extended over a long time, as the three children wore blue in their annual birthday photos in 2022 as well.
In 2020, the entire family wore blue for a photo op with David Attenborough, as well as in 2017 for that year’s holiday card.
Given this, there are few cases in which the family of William and Kate do not wear blue, as this color tends to be the rule rather than the exception! But the question arises: Why do Kate Middleton and Prince William choose to appear in this color as a family?
The simple answer is that Kate and William master the art of visuals. While they are unable to speak publicly on political issues, they convey their messages through their facial expressions or clothing. For example, on Remembrance Day family members wear black and red poppies, and during a visit to the Ukrainian Cultural Center shortly after Russia launched war on Ukraine, Middleton wore the colors of the Ukrainian flag in a subtle message of support, so wearing blue is a message too!
Basic color theory suggests that blue is the color that represents calm and responsibility, so for Kate and William, such a color projection is undoubtedly aesthetically appealing. The monarchy, after all, is about stable continuity, as color experts explain that wearing… The color blue also indicates a feeling of patriotism.
“For Kate Middleton, in particular, the color blue is her signature; she is committed to it,” says Elizabeth Holmes, author of the New York Times bestseller “His Royal Highness: Many Thoughts on Royal Style.” In her first official photos as a royal bride, she wore a blue dress, to match the famous sapphire and diamond engagement ring that belonged to her mother-in-law, Princess Diana.
Holmes confirms that, since then, the current Princess of Wales has worn every shade of blue, from soft and pale (which might be called Cinderella blue), to deep navy blue.
