Although he was banned from attending the Oscars for ten years, international actor Will Smith began to find his way in other awards, which confirms his continued great success.
According to what was described by the international press, Will Smith made a triumphant return to awards season last Wednesday night, during the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards.
Smith ascended the podium to receive the “Bacon Award”, delivering his first personal speech at an award ceremony since that controversial and immortal moment in people’s memory, which the whole world witnessed during the 2022 Academy Awards, after the actor was involved in the scandal slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage, after the latter mocked Smith’s wife, who was suffering from hair loss due to her illness.
When he ascended the podium to deliver his speech, Smith spoke about his movie “Emancipation”, describing it as the most difficult film in his artistic career at all.
Smith began his speech, as usual, joking with the audience, before moving on to that experience in the controversial film, and said that the experience he had in “liberation”, and the spitting of a white actor on his chest during one of the scenes, made the film the most difficult in his career. “In that moment, I knew God was real,” Smith added.
The global representative, Smith, thanked AAFCA, Apple and the public, who have played a major role in “keeping our stories” alive, he said. And he indicated that not retreating from the production of the film, despite the problems it faced with the budget, was a reason for highlighting the work to the whole world at the great level with which it appeared. “This was the first time I heard from the studio that the story is more important than the cost of doing it,” Smith added. “They make iPhones. They can do that.”
The award ceremony witnessed a focus on celebrating black excellence in the entertainment industry around the world, and its paragraphs contained a presentation of true stories and successes of African American filmmakers and actors, and a discussion of multiple points of view.
