Facts about Princess Diana on the 25th anniversary of her death

Princess Diana was killed in a tragic car accident 25 years ago, which caused mourning and grief around the world, and the following are facts about her life:

Diana Spencer was born on June 1, 1961 to an aristocratic family, the third of four sons of a noble family.

* In 1977 she met Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, at the stately Althorp House.

*In February 1981, her engagement to Charles was announced. On July 29 of the same year, they married in a lavish ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral in London and was watched by people all over the world. She became the Princess of Wales.

The couple’s first son, William, was born on June 21, 1982, and his younger brother Henry, better known as Harry, was born on September 15, 1984.

* In 1986, Charles re-established his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, a woman he later described as “the love of his life”. Diana suffered from bulimia, a serious disorder in eating habits. The royal couple continued their public duties, but both lived their private lives in isolation.

* In June 1992, her autobiography “Diana – Her True Story” by reporter Andrew Morton was published in secret collaboration with her. Her biography showed that she was trapped in a loveless marriage and that she attempted suicide to get Charles’ attention.

And in August of that year, newspapers published excerpts from a taped telephone conversation between Diana and James Gilby, who called her “the sweet gentleman” and repeatedly told her he loved her.

Prime Minister John Major announced the couple’s formal separation in Parliament in December.

Prince Charles gave a 1994 TV interview in which he admitted to infidelity, saying he remained faithful in his marriage “until it ended irreversibly (even though) we both tried.”

* On November 20, 1995, Diana gave a television interview with BBC correspondent Martin Bashir, in which she confessed to infidelity with former Army officer James Hewitt.

“There were three people in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” she said, referring to Charles’s relationship with Camilla.

On August 28, 1996, Charles and Diana divorced, ending a 15-year marriage.

* Diana was killed on August 31, 1997 in a car accident in Paris with her lover Dodi Al Fayed. After her funeral, she was buried on Althorpe Island.

* An investigation into her death in 2008 concluded that she and Al-Fayed were unlawfully killed due to the gross negligence of her chauffeur, Henry Paul. The photographers were chasing their luxury car.

* A 2021 investigation concluded that journalist Bashir lied and showed fake bank statements to convince Diana’s brother Charles Spencer to introduce him to his sister. And the BBC covered up his deception, according to Euronews.

The BBC then made payments to Diana’s former private secretary and former nanny to Princes William and Harry.

William said that the famous interview should never be broadcast again, and that the deceptive manner in which it was conducted “greatly affected” what Diana said, and added, “The interview contributed greatly to making my parents’ relationship worse, and has since done harm to a very large number of people other people.”
