France-born Wahbi Khazri scored Tunisia’s 1-0 victory over defending champions France, but that was not enough to avoid an early exit from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Wednesday.
Khazri scored in the 58th minute, after penetrating the ball and shooting from the edge of the penalty area, and led Tunisia to its third victory in six appearances in the competition.
And Antoine Griezmann thought he had equalized for France in the last seconds, but the referee canceled the goal due to offside after returning to the video assistant referee.
Australia snatched the qualification card to the round of sixteen with France, who qualified after winning the first two rounds, and played the match today with several substitute players.
France topped Group D with six points, with a goal difference ahead of second-placed Australia, who beat Denmark 1-0. Tunisia now has four points and is out of the competition.
France will play in the round of sixteen with the second-placed team in Group C, which will be decided later today, Wednesday.
