
For the first time since 1967, the Syrian president addresses the UN General Assembly
The Syrian Presidency’s Media Office announced on Sunday that President Ahmad al-Shara’a has traveled to the United States to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Al-Shara will participate in the UN General Assembly meetings scheduled for September 23-30, accompanied by Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and a high-level diplomatic delegation, according to a previous report by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Making him the first Syrian president to speak at the United Nations since the June 1967 war with Israel.
Al-Shara and Al-Shaibani will also participate in several meetings and events at the United Nations, in addition to holding bilateral meetings with heads of state and heads of delegations participating in the General Assembly, according to SANA.
He is also expected to speak at a special media event on Sunday evening, alongside other participants.
It is noteworthy that no Syrian president since former President Noureddine al-Atassi (1966-1970) has participated in the United Nations General Assembly meetings at the summit level
