At the premiere of “Couture,” Angelina Jolie blends the magic of fashion with the depth of experience
Angelina Jolie’s film “Couture,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada, was inspired entirely by her own personal experience. Jolie portrayed a horror film director who discovers she has cancer but refuses to give up and begins to balance her work with the nature of her illness.

The film’s story reflects part of Jolie’s real-life experience. In 2013, the international star announced that she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy after discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene, which increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, a disease to which she lost her mother and grandmother.
The film’s writer and director, Alice Winokur, said that Angelina Jolie’s character, her strength, and her willpower were inspirational to her as she wrote the script. She drew on the story of the international star’s illness and her determination to move forward with her life, explaining that she wanted to show her fragility and strength as a woman behind the international star’s image.
The film features three female characters: Maxine, played by Angelina Jolie; Angel, a makeup artist played by Ayla Rumpf, who aspires to become a writer; and Ada, a model from South Sudan, played by Anyer Anyi. The director’s clear vision throughout the film was that they represent one woman at different stages of life.
The film is scheduled to be released commercially in cinemas around the world next December, coinciding with the New Year holidays.
