Over the past few hours, Syrians and social media have been preoccupied with a video clip showing president Ahmad al-Sharaa joking with an American diplomat during his meeting with members of the Syrian community in Washington during his visit last week

The video spread like wildfire, showing al-Sharaa describing Khaled Wolfsberg, the translator for the US Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, as a “sniper,” after the diplomat picked up a microphone that was on the table and was about to fall to the ground, so he pounced on it in seconds and saved the situation.

While Al-Sharaa was talking about his country’s issues, the situation occurred, the president commented, and everyone burst into laughter.

Al-Sharaa said in the Syrian dialect: “Wow, a sniper playing basketball.”
