Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg abdicates in favour of his son Guillaume.

Henry, 70, had served the tiny duchy at the heart of Europe for 25 years in a largely symbolic role

Guillaume, 43, will be crowned in a ceremony later on Friday and will then greet the public on the balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace with the royal family at his side.
Guillaume will be Luxembourg’s seventh Grand Duke since 1890, when the modern monarchy was founded.

Members of the royal families from the Netherlands and Belgium are expected to attend the inauguration ceremony. Later on Friday, the new Grand Duke will host an evening reception for guests, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier

Over the weekend, Guillaume will embark on a traditional tour of the country, culminating in a Mass on Sunday with Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich at the Catholic Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Luxembourg.
This small country, which broke away from what are now France, Belgium, and Germany in the 17th and 19th centuries, is a parliamentary democracy, headed by a Grand Duke, similar to King Charles in the United Kingdom or King Philippe in Belgium
